Glimpse of the puppet (Wayang)
Wayang (puppet), is a performing art native Indonesian which was rapidly growing in Javanese island and Bali island. UNESCO, a agency that oversees the culture of the United Nations (PBB), on 7 November 2003 set a wayang as a shadow puppet show a famous from Indonesian, a masterpiece of world heritage which is invaluable in the art speak. Many countries has a puppet show too. However, a shadow puppet show (Wayang) in Indonesian has a own style and unique, which was originality masterpiece from Indonesian. Therefore, UNESCO put it into world heritage list in 2003.
History about Wayang
There wasn’t proof which show Wayang existed before Hinduism spread in South Asia. It was estimated that perfoming art brought in by India’s trader. However, the genius of local culture that existed before Hinduism entered together with the development of performing arts which coming has given own color on perfoming art in Indonesia. Until now, the early records that can be obtained about puppet performing came from Balitung inscription in fourth century which reads “Si Galigi Mawayang”.
When the Hindu religion entered Indonesian and adjust with existing culture, art performing to be an effective media for spread the Hindu religion, where the puppet show using the story of Ramayana and Mahabrata.
Similarly with Islam religion, when the puppet show which is performing “God” or “Angel” in human form is prohibited, then came puppets made of cowhide, where the show on which is now just watched a shadow, which is now we know it as a puppet skin (Read Indonesian : Wayang Kulit).
For spread the Islam religion, the puppet shadow develops Wayang Sadat which is introducing Islam values.
